a single sentence and derives from the recognition that
the explanation of
linguistic forms must include semantic and pragmatic considerations.”
De forma muy concisa trataré de hacer una comparación entre los dos
planteamientos, como la que hace Leech (1983:46):
a. Los formalistas
(p. ej. Chomsky) tienden a ver la lengua, principalmente, como
un fenómeno mental. Los funcionalistas
(p. ej. Halliday) suelen considerarla como un
fenómeno social.
b. Los formalistas
tienden a explicar los universales
lingüísticos como si fueran
derivados de una herencia lingüística genética común de la especie humana. Los
funcionalistas
suelen explicarlos como derivados de la universalidad
de los usos de la
lengua en las sociedades humanas.
c. Los formalistas se inclinan a explicar la adquisición de la lengua por los niños en
los términos de una capacidad humana interna para el aprendizaje. Los funcionalistas
se
inclinan a explicarlo en relación al desarrollo de las necesidades comunicativas de los
niños en la sociedad.
d. Básicamente, los formalistas
estudian la lengua como un sistema autónomo,
mientras los funcionalistas la estudian en relación con su función social.
Igualmente, pero a través de su experiencia didáctica, Rivers
(1968:12) prefiere
usar el término activismo
para referirse al funcionalismo, lo siguiente es lo que ella
considera las principales diferencias entre los dos caminos:
“Formalists have mostly relied on a deductive form of teaching, moving from the
statement of the rule to its applications in the example; activists have advocated
the apprehension of a generalization by the student himself after he has heard
and used certain forms in a number of ways -
a process of inductive learning.
Formalists with a commendable regard for thoroughness have sometimes
become too preoccupied with the pedantic elaboration of fine details of grammar,
where as activists have consistly urged a functional approach to structure
whereby the student is first taught what is most useful and most generally
applicable, being left to discover at later stages the rare and the exceptions.”
